Leave A Legacy
What is Leave A Legacy?
Leave A Legacy is a public awareness campaign utilizing public relations and the media to educate donors and the general public about the importance and value of leaving a charitable bequest to a non-profit organization. Promoted by the National Committee on Planned Giving (NCPG), it is a collaborative effort that partners non-profit organizations, development officers, planned giving and estate professionals.
Developed in 1996 in Columbus, Ohio, the “Leave A Legacy” program is an on-going effort, not a one time or one year program. Over 135 communities across the country and in Canada are participating in this effort.
Why is the program needed?
- It is estimated that by the year 2040, a $15+ trillion transfer will be made through estates.
- Less than 50 percent of Oregonians have a current, valid will and it is estimated that only 6 to 10 percent of these estates will make a charitable bequest.
- A community-wide awareness and marketing effort is too extensive/expensive for nonprofits.
- A Planned Giving Program diversifies a nonprofit’s revenue sources and increases endowments.
